Nature's Raw Power

Not to be confused with the Raw Power of Iggy and the Stooges, this is a raw power that really might destroy you. Here are two shots from National Geographic's photo contest that is going on until November 30. For sheer spectacle, these might be the winners for me, though there are many other shots that are really remarkable.

So I think the volcano one is cool. I definitely don't understand WHY the lightning has to strike in the middle of a volcano eruption, but it makes for a great picture. And is the other one a tornado? Way cool stuff.

The top one is a supercell storm (the BIG storms that destroy stuff) up in Montana. Cool stuff does happen there from time to time.

The bottom one is from the volcano that erupted on Iceland and grounded all those flights. Apparently, (and I found this out from my mother) volcanic eruptions like this (pyroclastic, right?) become their own lightning storm, because all the particles in the air create tons of friction and electricity. So that explains the lightning in the eruption. When I learned that bit of info my love and fascination with volcanoes tripled.
